Meet our garden volunteers: Jane

Selly Manor garden is a special place

This is the final in a series of blogs about the Selly Manor garden volunteers. For the past year we have welcomed several new volunteers. So far, we've introduced three of them, our last one is Jane:

"I like gardening because it’s exercise and you usually have something to show for it, even if it's a weeded bed, you get a sense of satisfaction. Seeing something you have planted growing is very gratifying. However, I could do without heavy digging as it makes my back ache.

I enjoy making Selly Manor garden look good and welcoming for visitors. It’s an important part of Bournville. I am a very loyal Brummie and I love the assets the city has and want them to look their best. I’ve also enjoyed meeting new people, fellow volunteers, staff, people who I wouldn’t have met if I hadn’t volunteered.

The Wildflower area, and Parterre with box hedges

My favourite features of the garden are the wildflower area, especially when it’s in full bloom, and the kitchen garden because it’s interesting to see what will grow. The garden is green all year round because of the box hedges but it’s full of bright colours in the Spring and summer because of the perennials.

The Kitchen Garden from early spring to mid-autumn

If I could garden anywhere it would have to be Kew Gardens – so many different types of gardens all in one (huge) space!

If I could be any plant, it’d be my favourite, the sunflower. I love the colour and size of them. They are easy to grow and look fantastic en masse in a field. They’re also useful after they’ve finished blooming – the seeds can be roasted and they’re delicious!"
