Behind the scenes

As we have now firmly come out of summer and are getting started on a chilly autumn, you might be wondering what we have been up at the museum since we re-opened in August…
After closing our doors in March we finally re-opened Selly Manor Museum on the 5th August. The lead up to that was a pretty busy few weeks where the team had to adapt everything to make it Covid secure, including setting up a new online booking system and buying PPE. Our re-opening went smoothly and the team were so happy to be welcoming visitors to our site again.
The past two months have been pretty busy for us! As well as a redisplay of the house with some new interpretation, we have had two exhibitions, with our second exhibition ‘The Sweet Life of Bournville’ getting national coverage on the BBC. We have especially loved chatting to visitors who think they might be in photographs or who have wanted to share their stories after viewing this exhibition. Bournville Heritage Online, which was part of Birmingham Heritage Week, showcased some of our fabulous archives and shared our knowledge of Bournville with the community. We also did two walking tours of Bournville and two Curator’s tours of Selly Manor in September, and it was fantastic to engage with the community on a more personal level again.
But as well as the day to day running of the museum our team has been very busy behind the scenes! We have been doing funding applications, planning events, connecting with teenagers to improve their experience of the museum, researching in our archives for Black History Month, fielding many phone calls about a lot of different things, attending meetings about Christmas, holding weddings and doing lots of video calls and training! Can you tell we like to be busy at Selly Manor?
We have loved being open again to the public and although we are in a period where we are having to adapt on an almost weekly basis, we think that keeps things interesting! We are still planning to make the most of 2020, so if you haven’t visited us yet keep an eye on our website www.sellymanormuseum.org.uk or our social media channels to find out what we are up to!
Love,
The Selly Manor Team
