Join us for this special event in celebration of Black Tudors for Black History Month.
Early in 2024 Selly Manor commissioned four young, local, artists of Black Heritage to create artworks depicting Black Tudors. Black Tudors migrated from Europe, from Africa, and from the Spanish Caribbean, and many made England their home.
Heritage Engagement Officer, Louise Deakin will talk about the project and the inspiration behind the exhibition. In conversation with one of the artists, Annie Pearson, she will look closely at one of the subjects, Cattelena, an independent, single Black woman, who lived in a small English village during the Tudor era. Annie will share her artistic process and motivation in creating the piece.
Get up close to Annie's work and the other pieces created for the exhibition earlier this year.
About the artist: Annie is a rising talent on the art scene in Birmingham. A poet, artist and all-round creative from South Birmingham, she uses paint, pastel, print, pens and pencils to produce pictures for personal pleasure and professional endeavour. Her poetry has featured in magazines, poetry competitions and her own selection of songs and raps.
Her proudest moment as an artist/Brummie was working with UB40 to promote their most recent album through art.
