Lovely letters from Laurence

As part of his work experience placement from Newman College, Jordon Savage has been cataloguing boxes of archives. There were lots of interesting items such as photos, booklets, and newspaper clippings. But two items really stood out to Jordon. They are letters from Laurence Cadbury to his mother Elizabeth in 1902. One is to her when she is holidaying in Bournemouth. Laurence, who was a 13 year old boy at the time, sounds a bit envious - he draws pictures of the boats he hopes she will see sailing past on the Channel! The other letter he writes from boarding school and tells her how much he is missing her. He also tells her how he is planning to get washed in hot water at night, rather than getting up with all the other boys in the morning and using cold water! Jordon said 'these letters really stand out as they highlight the normality of the Cadbury family. Although they were rich and influential, they still wrote affectionate letters to each other regularly'.
